Basic training on the dunes above the bay for a great many of the men sent to Korea and Vietnam, on ground chosen because it looked like nothing in particular and had room. It closed in 1994 and split three ways: a university, a national monument, and a fenced expanse still being cleared of unexploded ordnance decades later.
