Great Lakes, where the Navy is made
1911
North Chicago, Lake County, Illinois

Every enlisted sailor in the United States Navy goes through boot camp here, on a lake, a thousand miles from either ocean. It is the Navy's only recruit training command. It has been running since 1911 and put over a hundred thousand people through in the Second World War alone. The Golden Thirteen, the first Black officers the Navy ever commissioned, were trained and commissioned at this station in 1944, in segregated quarters, having been given a course the Navy expected them to fail.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
