Leanin' Tree turns a greeting card plant into a western art museum
1974
Gunbarrel, Boulder, Colorado
Ed Trumble and Bob Lorenz started Leanin' Tree in Boulder in 1949 by trading western paintings for advertising and printing the images as Christmas cards. When the company put up a new plant on the north edge of town in 1974, Trumble set aside part of it to hang the originals he had been buying from the artists he printed. The collection grew into a free museum of western painting and bronze that ran until August 2017, and cards kept coming off the line here until production moved north to Mead in 2024.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
