Louise Lathrup Kelley bought roughly a thousand acres of Southfield Township farmland and platted her own town on it in 1924, one of a very small number of American communities laid out by a woman developer. She wrote the rules too: single family houses only, faced in brick, stone or stucco. Most of the resulting village went on the National Register in 1998.
