La Porte is sold as farmland and turns into a beach town
1892
La Porte, Texas

A syndicate of developers out of Denver platted a town on the bay shore in 1892 and named it with the French word for door. They advertised orchards and truck farms, but the winters were too cold for citrus and the black gumbo soil defeated the vegetables. What the place actually sold was the water, and it lived off the Sylvan Beach resort trade until hurricanes and the war finished that.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
