Cudahy is sold off in lots long enough for a horse
1908
Cudahy, California
The meatpacking magnate Michael Cudahy bought 2,777 acres of the old Rancho San Antonio in 1908 and cut it into one acre parcels to resell. The lots were 50 to 100 feet wide and 600 to 800 feet deep, about the length of a city block, so a buyer could keep a vegetable garden, a citrus grove and a chicken coop or a horse stable behind the house. The strips are still visible in the street grid, and the city built on them now has one of the highest population densities of any incorporated place in the United States.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
