The Ridgley church, centre of a Black farming settlement outside Washington

The congregation formed in 1871 and began burying its dead here in 1892, and this one storey frame church went up in 1921 for a rural African American farming community that the suburbs later grew over. The building was picked up and moved to its present spot in 1990, and a fire in 2002 destroyed the original plaster. About twenty gravestones survive in the churchyard, most cut by hand with flower and vine designs.
