Island Trees bans nine books and loses at the Supreme Court

In 1976 the school board of this Levittown district pulled nine titles off the library shelves, among them Slaughterhouse-Five and an anthology of Black writers edited by Langston Hughes, after a parents' group circulated a list calling them anti-American and filthy. A student named Steven Pico sued. In 1982 the Supreme Court held that a board may not strip a school library simply to suppress ideas it dislikes. The justices produced seven separate opinions, so the rule is quoted constantly and settled hardly at all.
