Morton Grove bans handguns, the first town in America to try it
1981
Morton Grove, Illinois

In June 1981 the village trustees of this quiet Cook County suburb voted to outlaw the sale and possession of handguns inside village limits, something no American town had done before. Gun owners sued, and in Quilici v. Village of Morton Grove the Seventh Circuit upheld the ordinance in 1982, turning a village of 24,000 into the test case both sides of the gun argument cited for the next quarter century. Morton Grove repealed the ban in 2008 after the Supreme Court decided District of Columbia v. Heller.
