Hurricane Sandy drowns the shore at New Dorp Beach
2012
New Dorp Beach, Staten Island, New York

The surge of 29 October 2012 came ashore on this low east shore stretch of bungalows and killed more people than any other part of New York City. Twenty four Staten Islanders died, many of them inside their own houses, and a memorial board on the beach carries their names. Neighbours here and at Oakwood Beach organised buyout committees and sold whole blocks back to the state to be left as marsh.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
