One of only four Atlantic hurricanes to reach the American coast at Category 5, with a surge over twenty feet that took the front row of houses off their slabs. The story that a group died holding a hurricane party in the Richelieu apartments has been repeated for fifty years and was largely invented afterwards. The building did collapse, and eight of the twenty-odd people inside died.
