Howland Hook, the city's only container port on Staten Island

The site began as a coal dumper finished in 1949 that could empty a hundred rail cars a shift into barges for the harbour's power plants. American Export Lines built the marine terminal, and the Port Authority bought it in 1973 and converted it for containers. It sat closed through most of the 1980s and now works as Port Liberty New York, on the Arthur Kill just north of the Goethals Bridge.
