Sea-Land jumps to Tacoma and the port takes Seattle's cargo

Pierce County voters created the port in November 1918 and it came late to containers, not building its first crane until 1970. That turned into an advantage: on 13 May 1985 longshoremen unloaded the first Sea-Land ship at a new terminal with a dockside rail yard, pulling Seattle's biggest shipping tenant across the bay. Maersk followed within weeks and K Line in 1988, and the two ports eventually stopped competing and merged their cargo operations in 2015.
