On April 26, 1956 a converted tanker called the Ideal X left this waterfront for Houston with 58 truck bodies lashed to its deck. Malcom McLean, a trucking man who wanted cargo loaded once instead of piece by piece, had cut the cost of moving freight so far that world trade reorganised itself around a steel box. The Port Authority opened the Elizabeth side in 1962, the first terminal anywhere built for containers from the start.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
