Barbours Cut brings the shipping container to Texas
1977
Barbours Cut, La Porte, Texas
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The Port of Houston opened its first terminal built for standardised containers here in January 1977, the first in Texas and the first on the Gulf of Mexico. Ships reached it in about three hours from open water, against six or more to the old Turning Basin upstream. Container traffic moved downstream with it and the Gulf cargo map was redrawn around this cut.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
