Glen Echo opened in 1891 as a Chautauqua assembly of lectures and concerts, went broke, and reopened as a private amusement park in 1911 that admitted white customers only for its entire run. On 30 June 1960 a group of students largely from Howard University bought tickets and rode the 1921 Dentzel carousel in protest, and several were arrested. The park opened to everyone the following season. The National Park Service runs the grounds as an arts centre now and the carousel still turns.
