Gwynn Oak Park desegregates on the day of the March on Washington
1963
Gwynn Oak, Maryland
This 64 acre amusement park ran a whites only admissions policy from 1893, and about 400 demonstrators were arrested protesting it on 4 July 1963. The owners admitted Black visitors on 28 August 1963, the same day as the March on Washington. Sharon Langley, eleven months old, was the first Black child to ride the carousel. Hurricane Agnes wrecked the park in 1972 and it closed in 1973, but that carousel was installed on the National Mall in 1981 and still runs.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
