The Port of Fernandina, the Atlantic end of Yulee's railroad
1856
Fernandina Beach, Florida
Fernandina sits on a natural deepwater harbour at the mouth of the St. Marys, which is why David Yulee made it the Atlantic end of the railroad he pushed across Florida to Cedar Key in the 1850s. Cotton, timber and naval stores moved over these docks until Henry Flagler's east coast line pulled the trade south. It is still a working port, the northernmost in Florida, loading paper and lumber from the island's mills and running container ships to the Caribbean.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
