Teachers College founded Horace Mann in Manhattan in 1887 as a demonstration school where new teaching methods could be tested on real classrooms. It moved up to Riverdale early in the twentieth century and later separated from the college entirely. It is one of three well known private schools packed onto the same ridge above the Hudson.
