Grymes Hill, the shipowners' ridge that turned into a college campus

This serpentine ridge is the second highest natural point in New York City, and in the nineteenth century its view over the harbor drew the men whose fortunes came off that water. Sir Edward Cunard of the steamship line held a 38 acre estate on it, with Vanderbilt land alongside. Wagner College moved onto the Cunard property in 1918 and took in the neighboring Jacob Vanderbilt estate four years later, so the private lawns became a campus.
