Michigan State Normal School, the first teachers' college outside New England
1849
Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti, Michigan
Ypsilanti got the state's teacher training school in 1849, making it the fourth normal school founded in the United States and the first anywhere outside New England. In 1899 it became the first normal school in the country to offer a full four year course, which pulled the whole profession toward a degree rather than a certificate. The name changed to Eastern Michigan University in 1959 and the campus is now one of eight research universities in the state.
