Valentine Hicks bought farmland here in 1834 and put a depot on it in 1837, which became the eastern end of the young Long Island Rail Road. The hamlet that grew around the tracks took his name. Hicks was Elias Hicks's son in law and later ran the railroad himself. The line pushed on to Farmingdale in 1841, and the station is now the busiest on Long Island outside the city terminals.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
