Baldwin, the rail crossing both armies wanted

Two railroads crossed at this spot, which is the only reason the place exists and the reason armies fought over it: the line west to Lake City met the line from Fernandina to Cedar Key. The town took its name in 1860 from Dr. A. S. Baldwin, who had helped bring the first track through. Union forces held it in February 1864 on the march that ended at Olustee, and that August a Confederate cavalry unit skirmished here with the 102nd United States Colored Troops. Baldwin stayed a separate town when Jacksonville consolidated Duval County in 1968.
