Harlem River Yards, leased away for 99 years

This 96 acre freight yard on the Harlem River was Penn Central's and then the state's, sitting abandoned until New York leased the whole thing to a private developer in 1991 for 99 years. Only 28 acres kept a rail function, and most of that now moves the city's garbage rather than freight. A New York Post printing plant ran here from 2001 to 2021, alongside a FedEx depot and a waste transfer station, which is why Port Morris residents spent decades arguing that the deal handed them truck traffic instead of the jobs they were promised.
