Gross Point goes broke when Prohibition shuts its taverns
1924
Wilmette, Illinois

West of Ridge Road, Gross Point was a German farming village whose municipal budget leaned heavily on its taverns and, after 1920, its speakeasies. Prohibition took the revenue, the village went bankrupt, and Wilmette absorbed it in two pieces in 1924 and 1926. Today's Wilmette is that merger, a lakefront Yankee suburb and a German farm town stitched together by a dry law.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
