Greenbelt Homes, the New Deal town its residents bought outright
1952
Greenbelt, Maryland
The federal government built Greenbelt in 1936 and ran it as rental housing, then Congress voted in 1952 to sell the green towns off. Rather than watch the place be broken up lot by lot, residents formed a cooperative and bought most of the original houses along with a large share of the surrounding woods. It holds about sixteen hundred homes, and a member buys a share in the whole rather than a deed to one address.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
