Greenbelt, the New Deal town the government built from scratch

Rexford Tugwell's Resettlement Administration started construction in 1935 on three federally owned garden cities, and Greenbelt was the first to open, in 1937. The plan put housing, shops and schools inside a ring of woods, with cooperatives running the store, the cinema and the newspaper. Of the three towns built, Greenbelt's centre has survived with the fewest changes, and it is a National Historic Landmark.
