Grand Forks floods and then burns

The river crested more than three feet above the dikes and effectively the whole city, around 50,000 people, was evacuated, the largest evacuation of an American city since the Civil War. Then a fire started downtown and burned eleven buildings while they stood in water, with fire crews wading and the hydrants submerged. The photograph of a block alight in the middle of a flood is the one everyone remembers.
