Chelsea burned a second time on 14 October 1973, in the wood frame junk and rag yards known locally as the rag shop district. Strong winds and thin water pressure let the fire jump a street within five minutes of the first alarm and take eighteen acres. It started about 200 yards from where the 1908 fire began, and its cause was never established.
