The 1937 flood
January 1937
Paducah, Kentucky
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The Ohio rose 60 feet and covered nine-tenths of the town for three weeks. Twenty-seven thousand of 33,000 residents were evacuated, the city effectively ceased to exist, and the twelve-mile floodwall built afterwards has held ever since.
