Grand Canyon University went for-profit to survive, then bought itself back
1949
West Phoenix, Arizona
Arizona Southern Baptists chartered Grand Canyon College in Prescott in 1949 and moved it to west Phoenix two years later. Carrying about twenty million dollars of debt in 2004, it converted into a for-profit company, listed on the stock market in 2008 and grew into one of the largest Christian universities in the country. A new nonprofit bought the academic operation back in 2018 for roughly 875 million dollars.
