Germans were a third of the city by 1865 and filled the south end with brick cottages and breweries. Anti-German feeling in both wars emptied it and it was slated for clearance, until a 1960 preservation society saved 1,600 buildings, now the largest privately funded historic restoration in the country.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
