Over-the-Rhine, the German brewery district
1865
Cincinnati, Ohio
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Germans settled north of a canal they called the Rhine and filled it with breweries, beer gardens and singing societies. It is the largest intact Italianate district in the United States, saved mostly by decades of poverty, and the lagering tunnels are still under the streets.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
