Kreischerville drops its German name
1854
Charleston, Staten Island, New York
CC0 · Wikimedia Commons
Balthasar Kreischer, a Bavarian immigrant, built a fire brick works on the clay beds here in 1854 and the village around it took his name, with company housing for the German families who worked the kilns. The plant turned out about 20,000 bricks a day. After the First World War, with German names being scrubbed from the city, Kreischerville was renamed Charleston, apparently after Kreischer's son Charles.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
