The radio evangelist Charles E. Fuller, whose Old Fashioned Revival Hour was one of the most listened to programmes on American radio, founded the seminary in 1947 with the Boston pastor Harold Ockenga. The first 39 students met in the Sunday school rooms of Lake Avenue Congregational Church. It was set up to argue against the separatism and anti intellectualism of fundamentalism, and Carl Henry, the first editor of Christianity Today, taught there.
