The seminary started at Lexington, Georgia in 1828 and spent nearly a century in Columbia, South Carolina, which is where the name comes from. Its board voted in 1924 to follow the population back toward Atlanta, raised half a million dollars for the move, and reopened in 1927 on a 57 acre tract in Decatur given by the Scott family. It is one of ten seminaries of the Presbyterian Church in the United States.
