Freedom was laid out around its steamboat yards
1832
Freedom, Pennsylvania
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Two steamboat builders bought about a hundred acres of riverbank in 1832 and platted the town around their yards, with the streets set to suit boat construction rather than the other way round. Fourteen houses went up in the first week. At least 108 steamboats were built at Freedom, more tonnage than anywhere else in Beaver County, and when that trade died the town turned to oil, monuments and caskets.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
