The Howard Colored Orphan Asylum in Weeksville
1866

After a white mob burned the Colored Orphan Asylum in Manhattan during the 1863 draft riots, the minister Henry Wilson and the widow Sarah Tillman opened a replacement in Weeksville, backed by General Oliver Howard of the Freedmen's Bureau. Wilson insisted on an all Black staff and board, which almost no orphanage in the country had. Money was short from the start, the institution moved to Long Island in 1908, and it closed in 1918 after burst pipes left two children with frostbite severe enough to cost them their feet.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
