Fort Snelling and Dred Scott

Built at the confluence the Dakota call Bdote, the place of their origin. Dred Scott lived here enslaved in free territory, which was the basis of his suit. After the 1862 war some 1,600 Dakota, mostly women and children, were interned below the fort and hundreds died.
