Coldwater Spring and Camp Coldwater

The Dakota know this spring as Mni Owe Sni and hold it sacred. The U.S. Army camped at it from 1820 while building Fort Snelling on the bluff above, and the settlement that formed around the water was one of the first non-Dakota communities in what became Minnesota. The spring runs year round and does not freeze over. The National Park Service manages the site as part of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area.
