Normandale Japanese Garden, built with help from Nisei veterans
1976
Normandale Community College, Bloomington, Minnesota
Bloomington's garden clubs started planning a Japanese garden in 1967, while the new Normandale junior college campus was still being laid out. The Tokyo garden architect Takao Watanabe guided the work, and Japanese American veterans of the Army's Military Intelligence Service Language School, which had trained its linguists at Fort Snelling during the Second World War, backed the project. The two acres of ponds, bridges, lanterns and a waterfall were built between 1972 and 1976 on the college grounds.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
