Fort Pitt and the war that went global
1758
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
A 22-year-old George Washington fired on a French party near here in 1754 and started a war that spread to Europe, India and the Philippines. The British took the point four years later and named the fort for Pitt. The three rivers made it the gateway west for the next century.
