Fort Defiance, where Grant's war started
1861
Cairo, Alexander County, Illinois
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The southernmost point of Illinois, where the Ohio meets the Mississippi, and the obvious place to put an army if the war was going to be fought on rivers. Grant took command here in September 1861, and the gunboats and transports that took Forts Henry and Donelson and then went down to Vicksburg were assembled off this point.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
