Fort McIntosh, the first American fort north of the Ohio
1778
Beaver, PA
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Continental troops threw up this log fort at the mouth of the Beaver River in 1778, the first American post built on the far side of the Ohio. In January 1785 commissioners including George Rogers Clark and Arthur Lee dictated the Treaty of Fort McIntosh here, taking Wyandot, Delaware, Chippewa and Ottawa claims to two thirds of Ohio. The Land Ordinance followed within months and the survey grid rolled west from there.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
