1862
Abercrombie, North Dakota

During the Dakota War the garrison and several hundred settlers were besieged here for six weeks, the only fort in the conflict actually invested. It held. The wider war ended with the largest mass execution in American history at Mankato and the expulsion of the Dakota from Minnesota, which is the part usually left out of the fort's story.
