Fort Peter is taken weeks after the War of 1812 had ended

Admiral George Cockburn landed troops on Cumberland Island on 10 January 1815 to tie down American forces that might otherwise reach the Gulf, and a force of roughly 1,500 overwhelmed the few dozen men holding the battery at Point Peter. The British then sacked St. Marys and burned the fort. The Treaty of Ghent had been signed in December but was not yet ratified, so the attack still counted as war. Hundreds of enslaved people crossed to the British lines, and when the fleet sailed in March it carried 1,483 Black refugees away rather than return them.
