Fort Morgan holds the channel
1834
Baldwin County, Alabama
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
A masonry star fort at the tip of the peninsula, built to close the entrance to Mobile Bay and obsolete almost as soon as it was finished, rifled artillery could break brick walls that had been designed against smoothbores. It was shelled into surrender in 1864 and kept in service through both world wars anyway.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
