Forest Hill sits on the ridge between the Passaic River and the Branch Brook valley in Newark's North Ward, first laid out by Elias Heller, who ran a file works down on the Belleville line and left his name on Heller Parkway. Between the 1870s and the 1920s the families behind Newark's breweries, thread mills and factories built their houses along these streets, in a run of revival styles from Tudor to French chateau. It became a National Register historic district in 1990 and is one of the largest in New Jersey.
