Downtown Gary, the company town US Steel built to be looked at
1906
Gary, Indiana
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Sixty buildings survive from the downtown US Steel laid out beginning in 1906, put up in Tudor, Gothic and Classical Revival dress to prove a mill town could look like a real city. The City Hall and Superior Courthouse of 1927, the Hotel Gary of 1926 and the 1929 Gary State Bank all stand within a few blocks of each other. Most of the district went up between 1906 and 1944, and much of it is now empty.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
