Madawaska and the Acadian Valley

Acadian families expelled by the British in the deportations of the 1750s worked their way up the St. John River and settled this valley in 1785, and their descendants never left: the upper St. John is still one of the most French-speaking places in the United States. The big white cross on the riverbank marks the landing. Madawaska holds an Acadian festival every August whose family reunions run four hundred people deep.
